Wordy Thursday

Hi friends! Wow, what a week it's been so far! I had to go to the emergency vet. I am having some issues with my bladder. My labs all came back, my creatine was a bit high but my bun was good. My alkaline was 8.5, which is way too high. Mom just got off the phone with our regular vet, who wants us both to go on the canned Royal Canin SO. Our vet knows that we eat a raw diet, and our Moms don't really want that to change, but right now there doesn't seem to be an alternative.

It's the grain in the food that causes the alkaline issues. The carbs. Our raw food has two pounds of raw meat and a cup of cooked polenta. We have so many questions for our friends: Are any of you on this prescription Royal Canin SO? Have you gained weight?

Have any of you been on this diet and gotten better and then switched over to a high quality grain-free cat food? Neither of us, Busby or me, has ever had a full blockage, just irritation caused by the high alkaline in our urine.

We are open to any suggestions. In the meantime, we have both started our new diet and we like it. Plus I am on antibiotics and sub Q fluids. I am getting a LOT of attention, which is nice. I sure hope I never have to go back to that emergency vet. That place was very scary!

xoxo, Raymond

    1. We looked into it, in Dr Pitcairn's book, which is our raw food bible. We at least have to bring my alkaline level down to acceptable levels before we try again with the raw. The good news is I never have been completely blocked, so we MAY be able to return to raw if we change the recipe.

  4. Sorry, we can't say about the specific food. We do recall when our cousin Flossie had bladder issues, her vet suggested her Mom add Vitamin C to her food to make the urine more acidic. You might want to discuss that idea with the vet as to whether that would be an idea, and what amounts to use.

    1. Simba, Flossie's vet is very smart. Last year when my alkaline level first went up, our Moms added Vitamin C to our raw food, but unfortunately it hasn't done the trick for me.

  5. I'm glad you like your new diet and that you are getting the care you needed, Raymond. I don't have any suggestions, only the thought that the polenta wasn't working out for you. I hope someone with more knowledge on this issue has some ideas!

  6. Yes, Ray...That's my food " Royal Canin SO Urinary " Wet and Dried !!! But now I eat only dried because I'm fuzzy. I don't like the wet food. but the doctor said it's O.K. ! As long as I eat one of them.

I lose weight when I went to jail ( Cattery ) even I still ate Royal Canin SO, but now I put back on weight ! I'm back to normal weight , and the food make me drink a lots like I suppose to. It's work for me !

Before my alkaline was 8.5 exactly the same as you, now low to 7.5, but the VET said she want me to get back to 6.5 which is normal so she won't allowed me to eat other food even the treats !
I can't have it. she said because some kitty is very sensitive, It might put me in the bad situation again so I better stuck with Royal Canin SO !

So far so good for me since I eat this food ! I drink normal, pee normal and act normal and mom said she notice now my fur is so black, so smooth and shinny. I do look healthy !
but daddy said it's a bit expensive but we got no option.

In Australia, I don't need the prescription. Daddy just have to go to The VET Clinic and buy it.
Mom used to search for alternative food for me, she put info in my FB Note, you can go to have a look.

    1. Mr Puddy, thanks for all the links, Mom will look at them tonight after work. You and I have the same alkaline levels. I'll get mine checked again in four weeks which is supposed to be about how long it takes the food to start working. Mom isn't letting ME have any treats either, but she is thinking of getting some freeze dried treats that don't contain any grain since I LOVE some treats! YES, this food is expensive. Mom just paid $43 for 24 cans.

  8. It would the polenta causing problems, wouldn't it? Made from cornmeal? If so, corn would be the worst thing to feed, in our mom's opinion. There are many grain-free raw options, if your humans want to try that again once you're levels are back down.

    Purrs and good luck!

    1. We'd love some grain free raw recipes, do you know where we can find them? Dr Pitcairn's book is what we use for our recipes and he only has one grain free recipe and it can't be fed on a daily basis. We have to have some carbs I think. Let us know if you have links to recipes for grain free raw food. Thanks!

  9. Our pug had to be on Royal Canin SO because she had bladder stones. She actually lost weight while on it. A lot of kitties with IBD can't have food with grains either. Check out my friend Lisa's website - www.ibdkitties.net - for info on grain free foods and diet tips. Glad to hear that Ray and Busby like the new diet. Sometimes that's more than half the battle!

  10. We can't really help you as we've never tried that particular food. We eat a combination of wet and dry foods and seem to thrive on them so far. Tama and The Beebs occasionally get raw lean hamburger meat or veal which they love but the others are not interested.

The way we look at is is.. whatever works!
